Polaris Wireless, provider of high-accuracy, software-based wireless location solutions, has announced that it has successfully completed field trials with a major Indian wireless network operator to prove compliance with India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) May 2011 mandate for location-based systems. The trials were conducted over a period of two weeks in the North East telecom circle of India, at Agartala, to demonstrate the effectiveness of Polaris Wireless Location Signatures (Polaris WLSTM) in urban, suburban and rural environments and remote areas. WLS is based on the 3GPP standardized RF Pattern Matching (RFPM) approach. A previous trial with another major wireless network operator in Bangalore exceeded the DoT requirements in urban and indoor environments.

The DoT mandate specifies accuracy levels of 30-95% within two years of adoption for a range of 50-300 meters in urban areas. Polaris Wireless achieved accuracy levels of 67-100% in its field trials in urban areas. For suburban and rural areas, the mandate specifies accuracy levels of 50-80% within three years for a range of 100-500 meters. Polaris Wireless achieved accuracy levels of 88-99%. For remote areas, the mandate specifies accuracy levels of 50-70% within three years for a range of 300-500 meters. Polaris Wireless achieved accuracy levels of 87-99%. Polaris Wireless is the first location solutions provider to exceed the DoT mandate in all categories, proving the attainability of the mandate thresholds.

Jagdish Mitra, CEO, CanvasM, said, “These trials are one of the most important milestones since we announced our partnership with Polaris Wireless. They endorse the fact that we have an ability to deliver and customize solutions, in a manner that will bring similar or even better quality services, suitable to the Indian market as mandated by the government.”

“We are very pleased with the performance of Polaris WLS in the recently-completed field trials,” said Srinivas Varadarajan, Vice President of Sales and Business Development, Asia, Polaris Wireless.

Polaris Wireless recently announced a partnership with CanvasM to serve multiple wireless operators pan India. It also recently expanded its India ‘Centre of Excellence’ development and operations organization, which was set up in 2005 in India.
