Ericsson sets up a new division inline with Digital India
The Company has also signed an agreement with Sterlite Technologies, a leading global provider of transmission solutions for the telecom and power industries, to accelerate its focus on smart, sustainable cities in the country.
In line with the government’s digital India initiative, Ericsson has set up a new division, Industry and Society, to focus on three industries – utility, transport and public safety and smart city projects is a part of the new division.
The Company has also signed an agreement with Sterlite Technologies, a leading global provider of transmission solutions for the telecom and power industries, to accelerate its focus on smart, sustainable cities in the country. The alliance will design, deploy, integrate and manage solutions in areas such as communications, public safety, intelligent transport and smart grid solutions, which will enable the establishment of sustainable smart cities in the country.
Sweden’s Minister for Housing, Urban Development and IT, Mehmet Kaplan, met with the Ericsson team to discuss the company’s initiatives around the Digital India Program. Minister Kaplan has been a proponent of Smart Urban development anchored around the pillars of economic, ecological and social sustainability.
Speaking on his visit to the Ericsson India office, the minister stated, “I understand Ericsson is very keen to partner with the Indian Government for its Digital India initiative. I think Indian and Swedish companies can develop smart and sustainable solutions together that can fit the scale and scope of the Indian requirements.”
Ericsson also comes out with Networked Society City Index. Interestingly, cities with low ICT maturity tend to mature faster than higher performing cities. While Delhi ranked at number 36 in its ICT maturity in 2014, its ICT maturity improvement rank during 2013-2014 has been second fastest, around the globe. This catalyze aggressive “Smart Sub-Cities” planning in Delhi as well as smart city planning around the country.
