eGovWatch: Wi-fi hotspots in Tamil Nadu identified

As part of Digital India initiative, BSNL is going to provide Wi-fi Hotspots in Thanjavur big temple and Sims park in Coonoor in Nilgiris district, in Tamil Nadu, a top official in Coimbatore Telecom, said.

BSNL has already identified various spots, like major tourist hubs and places with large public concentration and initially the services will be launched in Big Temple in Tanjavur and Coonoor Sims Park, two major tourist attraction of the State, Coimbatore Telecom Principal General Manager, D Sivaraj told reporters here.

As far as Coimbatore city is concerned, the system will be on place in major places with large public concentration like bus stands, railway stations and super market and malls, which would be ready by March 2016, Sivaraj said.

BSNL will be providing free Wi-Fi services for 30 minutes per 24 hrs–three times in a month for the same number which visitors can utilise in multiple sessions, he said.

After free usage limit was exhausted, one can continue using the service on paid basis for which subscription plans were available in the denomination of rs.30, rs.50 rs.90 and rs.150 for validity of 30 minuters, 60 minutes,120 min and one day, respectively, he said.

When asked about mobile network coverage, Sivaraj said while 90 per cent of 4,331 KM of National Highway was covered, 3,236 Km of 3,360 KM of railways were covered. Only 60 per cent of the over 8,200 State highway has come under the network and the remaining would be covered in another two years, he said.

To a question of landline and migration in mobile phone, particularly after introduction of  number portability, Sivaraj said that there was 10 per cent reduction in outflow and 15 per cent increase in new subscribers.

Similarly, after the introduction of scheme of free night services, there was a 10 per cent demand for land line, while 20 per cent reduction in surrender in Coimbatore and Tirupur, which has 1.8 lakh subscribers, Sivaraj said.
