Buying Ringing Bells Freedom 251 at Rs 251? wait for months

The world’s cheapest smartphone, Freedom 251 priced at Rs 251, has been launched by a Noida-based startup Ringing Bells. The Freedom 251, a 3G smartphone with specifications similar to entry level smartphones priced under Rs 5000, was launched by BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi. Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar, who the company had said would launch the phone, was not present at the event.

The bookings for the cheapest working smartphone has started and the sale will be open till February 22. However, appaently owing to the number of order, Ringing bell says in its statement that it will able to finish all deliveries by 30th June, which is four months away from now.
Ringing Bells is selling Freedom 251 via a dedicated portal www.freedom251.com, and the company will be charging Rs 40 extra for deliveries, so the total cost of the smartphone is Rs 291 ($ 5 aprox.).
The smartphone also comes with pre-installed apps for farmers,women, students and mass mix of Indian citizens. “Freedom 251 heralds a new era in the Mobile Handset and Telecom industry from the end consumer perspective in the hinterland of India. Farmers would have access to real time weather forecast and soil conditions which would in turn enhance their productivity and income while reducing uncertainties,”said Ashok Chadha, President, Ringing Bells.
“Similarly, the fishermen would also have access to real time weather forecast which would enhance their planning and safety. Women would have easy access to police apps to access and enhance their safety. Senior citizens would have easy access to medical apps and enhance their medical connect. Therefore the youth in rural and semi urban centres would have access to a very powerful tool in terms of a feature rich smartphone to increase knowledge and real time access to information, which would in turn enhance confidence and self-esteem and make them feel more equal to those who hail from metros and urban clusters,” he added.
Chadha also said that the company’s strategy is in sync with the government’s initiatives of ‘Make in India’, ‘Digital India’ & ‘Skill India’ and anchored on the pivot of ‘Startup India, Standup India’.”
“With Freedom 251, Ringing Bells has achieved both by an exceedingly affordable price of just Rs. 251 of the feature rich smartphone loaded with useful apps for farmers, fishermen, women and students. I wish them well and hope Freedom 251 will bring a significant societal impact to put India on an inclusive growth path,” said Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi.
According to the buyer’s tweets and Facebook post, the www.freedom251.com kept crashing, and they were unable to complete purchase for the Freedom 251 smartphone. Now, the company has has paused the website to upgrade it and shall be back in 24 hours, it writes on the website.
