India is so big, telcos can co-exist with OTP players: Ravi Shankar Prasad

Reiterating that there must be no discrimination on internet services for the people of India, communications & IT minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday that the world has big  expectations in the digital space from the country and given the big market the country provides, telecom companies will not suffer losses and can co- exist with over-the-top (OTT) players.

“The size of India is so huge that ultimately you (telecom companies) will not have to suffer problems in your account books,” the minister said while inaugurating ‘Digital Bharat 2015’ titled “Conversations for Advancing Digital India and Make in India.

The two-day programme has been organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry with the support of department of telecommunications (DoT) and The Financial Express. The minister also launched the Ficci-EY report titled ‘Speeding Ahead on the Telecom and Digital Economy Highway’.

Speaking on the occasion, DoT secretary, Rakesh Garg said that the government was committed to doing everything possible to make the environment conducive for industry and the consumer, the success of which will depend upon industry and government working together.

Anant Goenka, whole-time director & head, New Media, The Indian Express pointed out the importance of digital technology and how it has created many success stories of the young successful multi-millionaires who have used digital platforms innovatively.

The question that remains, he said, was how do we get to ‘Digital Bharat’ in a fair and sustainable way.
