Vivo’s Y51L offers good design, slim body and smoother operation

To strengthen its position in the growing affordable smartphone market, vivo India has recently launched Y51L, one of the first major model of 2016 from the company. As informed by the company official, Y51L has been assembled in the company’s Greater Noida assembly plant, which was launched last year in December with an initial investment of Rs 125 crores for the 30,000 sq.m facility which comprises several assembly lines, quality control lab and warehouses. Priced at Rs. 11,980, Y51L comes with a 5-inch HD IPS display and the company promises to offer long battery life, powerful performance, smoother operation. Does it hold upto the expectation? To know, let us explore the fine details of the device.
Out of the box, the device look and feel is almost similar to other devices from vivo India. The body that is made of plastic with metal strips running along the top and bottom of the rear along with sleek glass back cover add elegance to overall design and look, but can’t termed them premium or stylish. The front is dominated by 5-inch IPS display, which offer a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. The display quality is fairly decent. It is sharp and colourful. In fact, adjustable to light condition, you can even read in direct sunlight without much difficulty and also adaptive display works well indoor.
The front also houses a front camera on the top, while three capacitive touch keys are placed in the bottom. There is space for a 3.5mm headset jack on the top edge, while the bottom edge has space for speaker grille and micro USB charger. The power and volume rocker keys are placed at the right edge while the left edge is free from any distraction. The detachable rear panel is home to Vivo branding along with rear camera and LED flash. With the thickness of 7.52 mm and weight of 143 gms, the device is neither too slim nor too heavy. It is comfortable to hold and operate, and is non-slippery at the same time.
The Vivo’s Y51L runs on Android 5.0.2 and its entrails are powered by 1.2 Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410, Quad Core processor. The device comes with 2 GB RAM and has 16 GB capacity for internal storage that can be expanded upto 128 GB with the help of microSD card. During the review period, the device handle multi-tasking and graphic intensive games quite smoothly. There was no serious stutter or lag while switching between the apps to write about. Overall, it offers device offers decent performance.
On the camera front, Y51L comes with a 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. The camera division have inbuilt features such as face detection, geo-tagging, face beauty, panorama etc. Both the camera is decent and takes pictures with average quality and fine details in regular light. However, the images were little dull and less vibrant in low light condition. Camera section does not have anything distinctive to offer. In fact, some of the recently launched affordable smartphone such as Le 1s or Redmi Note 3 in totality have more to offer in this price range.
Vivo’s Y51L supports 4G LTE connectivity, Wi-Fi, 3G, 2G, Bluetooth and dual standby SIM. It is packed with a replaceable 2350 mAh battery which offer decent standby time and could last between 5-7 hours with multitasking and continuous data usage. There is nothing special about the battery life. Vivo again failed to bring it to the level of other Android device in this price range.
Overall, the Vivo’s Y51L is a decent 4G enabled budget smartphone with good design, slim body and offers smoother operation.
