These days every device makers seem to be gunning for the affordable smartphone segment as there has been flurry of new launches week after week. In fact, differentiation has become a tough task for reviewers to spot on. Recently, US-based InFocus which has been primarily known for DLP and LCD projectors, large-format touch displays and tablets in home market forayed into Indian market with the launch of many smartphones in budget and mid-segments. Its recently launched M680 is a decent mix of design, software and hardware. Priced at 10,999, InFocus M680 offers sharp display, decent camera quality and average battery life. Will M680 be able to win over existing low cost heavy-weights? To know, let us look into the device.

Out of the box, the first thing you are likely to notice about this smartphone is its premium design which seems to be inspired from iPhone 5 chamfered edges. The rear and the sides metallic finish further add elegance to the overall design. The front of the device is dominated by a 5.5-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080 pixels by 1920 pixels at a PPI of 401 pixels per inch. In usage, the display quality of M680 is fairly satisfactory with sharp and crisp resolution. You can also read in direct sunlight without much difficulty.

Power key and slot for SIM cards are placed on the right edge while the left has volume rocker keys. A 3.5 mm headset jack is placed on the top edge while the bottom edge is dedicated for Micro-USB port and a speaker grille. Speaker grilles have some issue as we faced serious difficulty in maintaining call quality. Front is also home to an earpiece, large cut-out for the front camera, sensors and notification LED, and a prominent company logo in the narrow space above the screen. Three capacitive buttons below the screen are not backlit, so you may have to spend some time to get familiar with it. The un-detachable rear panel is home to InFocus branding at the centre, along with rear camera and LED flash at the top right. Unlike other Android devices, all the buttons and keys are not customisable, so you cannot assign the task as per your convenience. With a thickness of 7.25 mm and weight of 158 gram, the device is neither too thick nor too heavy. It is comfortable to hold on but very slippery.

InFocus M680 runs on Android 5.1.1 and its entrails are powered by 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek 6753 processor and 2GB RAM. Android 5.1 is covered up by company’s UI and custom icon set. Most of the UI features expand on the capabilities of stock Android. And, also switching between UI and home screen app drawer is very smooth. During the review period, the phone worked without any major hiccup but at times some of the apps especially WhatsApp crashed which hampered the overall experience. The phone has 16 GB of internal memory for storage of which about 10 GB is available for use. The storage can be further expanded to 64 GB with the help of a microSD card.

On the camera front, InFocus M680 comes with a 13-megapixel auto focus, dual LED flash rear camera and a 13-megapixel front camera. Both the cameras are decent and take pictures with good quality and fine details in regular light. However, the images were little dull and less vibrant in low light conditions. Also, picture pixelates when you see it at full zoom. Camera app is fully customisable. Overall the camera division has something interesting for everyone.

InFocus M680 is packed with a non-replaceable 2600mAh battery. The overall performance of the battery has been at par with any other Android device in this range. It has decent standby time and can last between 5-7 hours with multitasking and continuous data usage. The device supports wi-fi, GPS, bluetooth, 3G, 4G–with support for band 40 use by some LTE networks in India.

Overall, InFocus M680 is a decent affordable smartphone with attracting design, sharp display, good camera quality and average battery life.
