eGovWatch: Andhra govt uses social media, launches portal to assess cyclone damage

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu took to social media Tuesday to assess the cylone damage. He said that social media is being used to collate data. The government has also launched a portal to assess the damage caused due to Cycone Hudhud.

The portal http://www.hudhud.ap.gov.in will facilitate collection, collation and analysis of the damage to assets and will be used by all departments. It connects to National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) website on #HudhudAP. People can send pictures for the web portal through WhatsApp to these numbers: 7893699024, 8978208690, 8978213563, 9618536805

Apart from on-ground officials working round-the-clock, the Andhra Pradesh government has mobilised volunteers through social media networks Facebook and Twitter to donate to the cyclone victims.

A volunteer network has also been created by publicising about it on the state government’s Facebook account and Twitter handle. The Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management page on Facebook is receiving tremendous response, requests and grievances, officials said.

This has helped the government galvanise support from on-ground volunteers and those in Hyderabad and other areas. A team is monitoring social media, under the office of advisor (communications) to government of AP, and has been noting down grievances and sending them to on-ground officials. The social media team has also contacted the district collector who has said that the drop of point for free relief material is Vizag airport.
