Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has invited ‘Request For Proposals’ from mobile operators to install WiFI hotspots at stations and trains in order to bring its entire network under the facility.

The move is aimed at providing a tech edge to the rapidly expanding network, which currently stands at around 193 km, and burgeoning smart phone users.

“This was a long standing demand of the commuters. We have asked mobile operators to submit their proposals and will check feasibility and other parameters after that,” an official said.

The deadline for the companies have been set around the end of May, the official added.

Recently, the metro had launched a unique initiative through which android phone users can earn credit points which can be later redeemed to recharge smart cards.

Currently, only trains and stations of the 5.1 km long Rapid Metro Network in Gurgaon are wifi enabled.

It has also upgraded its helpline to a more advanced 24×7 bilingual Interactive Voice Response System aimed especially at commuters who are not conversant with signages at station premises.
