Samsung’s top slot has the company’s sub $150 LTE models like Galaxy Grand Prime and Galaxy J2
Samsung has emerged as the largest 4G smartphone vendor in India as per the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, with shipments of smartphones going up by 21.4 per cent in the third quarter of 2015.
According to Karthik J, Senior Market Analyst for Client devices, 4G devices were the driving force behind this quarter’s smartphone growth in India with a three-fold increase in unit shipments over the past quarter. Samsung’s top slot has the company’s sub $150 LTE models like Galaxy Grand Prime and Galaxy J2 to thank, the report said. Lenovo was the top 4G brand the quarter before.
Samsung also led the Indian smartphone market with 13.1 per cent quarter-on-quarter growth fueled by LTE based smartphones.
Micromax retained the second position with a 6.4 per cent sequential growth thanks to the success of its new YU range of smartphones. Intex has secured the third position in Q3 2015 with 9.4 per cent growth and is emerging more powerful in the sub US$50 segment and entry level 3G enabled devices.
Lenovo combined with Motorola is now the fourth largest vendor owing to a strong 58.6 per cent quarter-on-quarter growth. The group also commands a 9.5 per cent market share now with strong models like the Lenovo K3 Note, A6000 Plus and Moto G 3rd Gen. Local manufacturing is expected to give another push to the group.
Lava has slipped to the fifth position primarily because of its inability to cash on the 4G market.
Karthik said “e-tailers such as Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon continue to drive shipments of the Chinese vendors, who have been aggressively trying to capture the 4G smartphone market in India”. “Almost one out of every two smartphones sold, had 5” plus displays,” says Jaipal Singh, Market Analyst, Client Devices, adding that this “highlights the shift in consumer preference from a device mostly used for voice calling to an advanced multimedia experience.”
