Amazon India, which is a fully owned subsidiary of US-based e-commerce platform Amazon, might soon become India’s No. 1 e-commerce website, overtaking Flipkart.
According to data from website analytics firm Alexa, on a real-time basis Amazon was ranked 85 globally, while Flipkart was ranked 79, based on traffic that both these sites generate, after day one of the “Big Billion Days” festive season sale by Flipkart.
Amazon’s “Great Indian Festive Sale” on the other hand started only on Wednesday. If Amazon is able to de-throne Flipkart, it will be the first time since Flipkart’s inception in 2007 that it will become India’s second largest e-commerce website.
According to Similarweb, another e-commerce website tracker Amazon’s web traffic for the month of September was 73.3 million, while Flipkart was 84.3 million.
In the month of April the gap was more — Flipkart monthly traffic was 79.5 million, while Amazon was 56.7 million.
Amazon has been consistently reducing the gap. There has been a great shift in ranking since the month of April, when Amazon ranked 111, while Flipkart was far ahead at 87. It seems that the fight to the top is between Flipkart and Amazon, considering Snapdeal that is the third largest in the space is far behind at No. 167.
