Wipro to scale up digital business operation

Wipro, the country’s third-largest IT services exporter, plans to scale up the operations of its newly-created digital business unit and is eyeing larger deals from this segment.

The digital business unit, set up about eight months ago, plans to tap into a vast array of business opportunities where enterprises are expected to increasingly use these technologies. The IT major has appointed Rajan Kohli, who was until now the head of its banking and financial services vertical, as the head of this business unit.

Talking to FE, Kohli said, Wipro Digital will increase its talent pool primarily by hiring people from outside the company. As digital is an emerging technology and business area, the access to inhouse talent is limited, he said. Wipro Digital will primarily hire these talent in locations such as the San Francisco Bay area, London, Bangalore and possibly New York.

Kohli said Wipro Digital’s key strategy would include both conceptualising and implementing this strategy for various sectors. “We will do end-to-end starting from conceptulisation, design and framework,” he added.

The entire digital technology business sector is still witnessing smaller deals in the range of $2-5 million with projections that it might get bigger over a period of time.

Kohli, however, felt that there are opportunities for them to get larger deals in digitising the back-end operations of various businesses.

Digital has become the new buzzword for the $146-billion Indian IT industry and the country’s largest exporter TCS has projected a revenue of $5 billion from this segment over the next five years. Infosys has also made a strong foray into the digital segment.
